First edition. – Sir Henry Roscoe from London received his doctorate from Bunsen in Heidelberg in 1854. 1858-86 he taught inorganic in Manchester. and physical. Chemistry, first at Owens College, then at the newly founded university. “Roscoe led significantly. Work in the field of spectral analysis. He was one of the first to use this process to determine trace admixtures in metals in the metallurgical industry, including the Bessemer process, which could be improved with his help. His main Merit for chemistry in Great Britain. was there an effort to reform higher education in the natural sciences. (Pötsch 369). illustrated with two plates of “Huggins Map of Mettalic Spectra”; three double plates of “Kirchhoff’s & Angstrom’s maps”, in sepia tones; two double page chromolithographic spectral tables, and one foldout table showing protuberances of the Sun, plus 80 text-illustrations including a number of scientific instruments. Some foxing mainly marginal. Half leather binding on bands, gold- and blindtooled spine, slight insignif. rubbing, marbled edges.The first English edition of «Spectrum Analysis. Six lectures, delivered in 1868, before the Society of Apothecaries of London» was published in 1869. – Title and plates verso with stamp; first three leaves with light foxing, binding a bit rubbed.
