74 engraved plates after Hogarth by Ernst Riepenhausen Contemporary half cloth.- The famous engravings of William Hogarth with the explanations of C.G. Lichtenberg below the image. Also the explanations are in German, the pictures tell their story even without understandig the text. Hogarth became famjiliar to a German audience chiefly owing to the influence of George Christoph Lichtenberg (1743-1799), who had purchased a collection of engravings from the artist’s widow, which he later sold to Göttingen University. Lichtenberg published a series of commentaries on Hogerth’s prints. In the ‚Sammlung Hogarthischer Kupferstiche‘, Riepenhausen was albe to copy the engravings in their entirety. Some critics consider some of his copies are superior to the engravings made by Hogarth himself.
