This ambitious work documents the monuments of the theater, scenic design, decorations and costumes for the theater and the great festivals, from the Medieval period to the Baroque; there are fine plates depicting architectural fantasies, early Flemish and Netherlandish theater, the garden and the stage, “grotesque comedy,” the Medieval theater and its influence upon manuscripts, images of Death, the festivals of Louis XIV, and the last great theatrical period of Vienna.
