Kitagawa Utamaro was a Japanese artist, one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and he is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large headed pictures of beautiful woman” of the 1790ties. Utamaro’s work reached Europe in the mid-ninetheenth century, where it was very popular. He influenced the European impressionists, particulary with use of partial views and his emphasis on light and shade. – The present book give a extensive overview of his work. – Front cover of the wooden box with small crack, otherwise fine.
