Rix-Ueno, Felice (?). – Two japanese designes

It is possible that these designes are by Felice Rix-Ueno (1893-1967), because of the designes ‚Two Japanese ladies in the background Lake Hakone and Mount Fuji‘ and ‚One Japanese Lady standing on the entrance‘ and specially the designs are drawn on stiff cardbord with the watermark ‚Neusiedel‘, the paper-making fabric in Klein-Neusiedl, who made the papers for the Viennese School of Applied Art, where Rix-Ueno was studiing and working for the Wiener Werkstätte. Her work created an unusually direct connection between Viennese modernism and Japanese visual culture. The designs combine flattered perspective, simplified figures, strong architectural framing and a striking palette of Turquoise, yellow, orange, blue and grey. Visible pencil underdrawing, construction lines and unfinished passages indicate the nature as working designs, probably conceived for illustration, graphic reproduction or a decorative project. While the present designs cannot presently be attributed to Felice Rix-Ueno, their Japanese subject matter, interwar Viennese graphic character and use of Austrian paper make her work and the wider Wiener Werkstätte/Kunsstgewerbeschule milieu particulary rlevant ponts comparison.
