Gilbert West’s Dissertation on the Olympic Games is the first modern history of the ancient games. The Dissertation incorporates a bibliopgraphic essay, historical conjecture and narrative, and description of the venue, athletes and events at Olympia. West considered the ancient games a political institution foremost, and demonstrated the importance of seeing the games as an elemental institution embedded in and revealing of the larger political culture of an ancient Greece. With the Dissertation, West joined British Classical scholars, tranlators and literary figures who found in ancient Greek liberty, virtue and patriotic value models for the British nation in the eighteenth century. – Contains also: Pindar, The first to the Fourteenth Olymic Odes. – The odes of Pythian, Nemean, Istmian and Horace. – Euripides, Iphigenia in Tauris. A tragedy. – Lucian, The triumphs of the Gout. – Apollionius Rhodius, Translations from the Argonauticks. – Missing the title-page, the first three leaves a bit browned; front board a bit loosened. – Even with the missing title-page, the original edition, like here is very hard to find and very rare.
