Persisches Wörterbuch – Persisches Wörterbuch. Handwritten mansucript.

This dictionnary is, as the author states on the first leaf, an extract of different grammars of the time, in particular Sebastian Becks ‘Neupersische Konversations-Grammatik’ (Heidelberg 1914), Adolf Wahrmunds ‘Praktische Grammatik der neu-persischen Sprache (Gießen 1889), Heinrich Leberecht Fleischers ‘Grammatik der lebenden Persischen Sprache nach Mirza Mohammed Ibrahim’ (2nd edition, Leipzig 1875), William St. Clair Tisdalls ‘Modern Persian conversation-grammar’ (Heidelberg 1902) and Paul Horns ‘Neupersische Schriftsprache’ (in: Wilhelm Geiger, Ernst Kuhn (Hrsg.) Grundriß der iranischen Philologie, Straßburg, Trübner, 1898-1901, S 1 – 200). But as another (third) writter states with regret, that when writting this volume they did not use the ‘Vullers!’. This is the german Orientalist Johann August Vullers, who was engaged with the grammatical and lexical editing of the new-persian language and he got great merit as translater and editor of the works by Firdausi, Mir Hwand and Zarathustra. – A second writer, the then owner of the book. states on the title very extensive the provenance of the book ‘from the estate of the liner-captain Roß’ who is the author of the book, who died in 1935 in Graz (Ausstria), he got it from the ‘liner-captain v. Arbesser’ in November of the same year. Captain Roß was, as it is stated, a connoisseur of the new-persian, arabic and turcish language. He also knew Sanskrit, Awästisch, old-church-irianian etc. He was also a great mathimatician, he knew astronomy. Finaly he was weaving carpts in the Persian manner with beautiful poems in Persian language. A quiet, good person, whom I got to know in 1932 through Admiral Gratzl.
