A delightfully eccentric fin-de-siècle love novel by Paul Scheerbart, subtitled “A railway novel with 66 intermezzos.” Rather than following a conventional plot, the book unfolds in playful fragments-comic, philosophical, and surreal-moving with the rhythm of travel and modern life. – The unforgettable illustrated title page, showing a cat calmly enthroned atop a human heart-clock, perfectly reflects Scheerbart’s wit and imagination. Published in 1897, the book anticipates later avant-garde and surrealist sensibilities, combining humor, irony, and gentle provocation in equal measure. An engaging and uncommon example of early modernist experimentation, appealing to collectors of avant-garde literature, illustrated books, and literary curiosities. – Extremly rare first edition of Scheerbaert’s third publication, within the illustrated front wrapper in mint condition. -W.-G 3.
